Pergolas in Austin

Attached or Freestanding

An attached pergola ties into your house and shades the area by your back door. A freestanding pergola stands on four or more posts anywhere in the yard, like over a fire pit or an outdoor dining area. We help you pick based on where you want shade and how the sun hits your yard.

Built to Stay Square

Wind and our clay soils will rack a weak pergola over time. We set every post on a concrete footing, use thick beams and add knee braces where the design needs them. If the pergola goes on a patio, we can pour the slab and the footings together.

More Shade

A pergola gives you filtered shade, not full shade. We can space the rafters closer, add a second layer of slats, or leave room for shade cloth or climbing plants. If you want full cover from rain, a patio cover may be the better fit.

Common Questions

How much shade does a pergola give?

It depends on the rafter spacing and the direction the boards run. Closer rafters and a top layer of slats give more shade.

Cedar or treated pine?

Cedar looks warmer and resists rot. Treated pine costs less. Both need a sealer or stain to last in the Texas sun.

Can you build a pergola on my deck?

Yes, if the deck framing can carry it. We check the framing first.
