Wood vs Composite on a 12x16 Austin Deck, Priced Line by Line
You want a deck off the back door, about 12 by 16 feet. Every website gives you a price per square foot from somewhere else. You want to know what it costs here, with parts from a store you can drive to.
On October 31, 2026, the parts for a plain 12x16 wood deck cost $1,289.48 at the south Austin Home Depot. Trex boards raise that to $1,934.88 or $2,081.76. Add crew wages and the deck comes to about $2,740 to $5,373 before a builder's overhead and any permit.
- Wood deck parts, $1,289.48.
- Trex Enhance deck parts, $1,934.88 to $2,081.76.
- One crew day at local median pay, $362.56.
- Austin's fee schedule has no deck line, so ask.
The Deck We Priced
We priced one simple deck so the numbers mean something. It is 12 by 16 feet and attached to the house. It sits low, on four posts and one beam. The joists run 12 feet and sit 16 inches apart.
Every price is the shelf price at the south Austin Home Depot, store 6542, on October 31, 2026. We set five other area stores the same day. Hutto, Georgetown, Leander, Cedar Park and Kyle all showed the same prices. Sales tax is not included.

Frame Parts, Line by Line
The frame is the part you stop seeing once the boards go on. It is also the part that holds you up. Here is every piece for this deck.
| Part | How many | Total |
|---|---|---|
| 2x8x12 treated joists | 13 at $18.18 | $236.34 |
| 2x8x16 treated ledger and rim | 2 at $23.38 | $46.76 |
| 2x10x16 treated beam boards | 2 at $34.98 | $69.96 |
| 6x6x8 treated posts | 4 at $37.88 | $151.52 |
| Fast-setting footing mix, 50 lb bag | 16 at $7.97 | $127.52 |
| Simpson post bases | 4 at $26.27 | $105.08 |
| Simpson joist hangers | 26 at $2.83 | $73.58 |
| LedgerLOK screws, 50 pack | 1 at $46.72 | $46.72 |
| Deck screws, 5 lb box | 2 at $29.97 | $59.94 |
| Frame total | $917.42 |
The footing mix line assumes about four bags per hole. Deeper holes in clay or rock take more.
| Boards | Board cost | Whole deck parts |
|---|---|---|
| Treated pine, 27 boards | $372.06 | $1,289.48 |
| Trex Enhance Basics plus clips | $1,017.46 | $1,934.88 |
| Trex Enhance Naturals plus clips | $1,164.34 | $2,081.76 |
Wood vs Composite Boards
The boards are where the price splits. This deck takes 27 boards that are 16 feet long. Treated pine boards cost $13.78 each. Trex Enhance Basics cost $31.98 each, and Trex Enhance Naturals cost $37.42 each.
Trex boards also need hidden clips. A 200 square foot bucket was $154. TimberTech boards were listed that day but showed no shelf price, so we left them out.

Rails Over 30 Inches
The 2021 residential code requires a guard on any deck more than 30 inches above the ground. The guard has to be at least 36 inches tall, per this deck code summary.
For three open sides of this deck, six treated rail kits at $57.98 and four 4x4 posts at $10.68 come to $390.60. A Veranda composite rail kit was $108.78 for each 6 foot section. A low deck may not need rails at all.
What Crew Time Costs
Labor is the biggest number most people never see broken out. The BLS wage survey for the Austin metro from May 2025 gives the pay. Carpenters earn a median of $24.16 an hour. The middle half earn $23.05 to $28.01. Construction laborers earn a median of $21.16.
A crew of one carpenter and one helper for an 8 hour day costs $362.56 in wages. How many days a deck takes is the builder's call, so here is the math for three cases.
| Crew days | Wages only |
|---|---|
| 4 days | $1,450.24 |
| 6 days | $2,175.36 |
| 8 days | $2,900.48 |
These are wages. They are not a quote.
The Permit Line
A 12x16 deck is 192 square feet. That is under the 200 square foot line on the city exemption list. If it is also free of the house, low and not an exit, it may need no permit at all.
Attach it to the house and it needs one. The city's fee schedule has no deck line, so ask which lines apply. Application processing alone is $112.76. Our Austin permit guide lists the rest.
The Range, Added Up
Here is the deck added up three ways. Each row is parts plus crew wages. The permit is on top, if your deck needs one.
| Build | Parts and wages | Total |
|---|---|---|
| Wood boards, no rails, 4 crew days | $1,289.48 and $1,450.24 | $2,739.72 |
| Trex Basics, rails, 6 crew days | $2,325.48 and $2,175.36 | $4,500.84 |
| Trex Naturals, rails, 8 crew days | $2,472.36 and $2,900.48 | $5,372.84 |
That works out to about $14 to $28 a square foot before overhead.
Why a Real Quote Runs Higher
A builder's quote will be higher than this table, and it should be. The quote also pays for insurance, the truck, tools, waste, sales tax and the cost of running a business. It pays for the call back if a board cups next summer, too.
So use this page to read a quote, not to replace one. Ask for parts, labor and the permit on their own lines. If the parts line is far above the shelf prices here, ask why. Sometimes the answer is a better board or a taller deck, and that is fine.
The Gaps
Most deck cost pages quote one national price per square foot. They do not show the parts list, the local pay or the permit line, so you cannot check them. Rock and clay also change the footing work a lot around Austin, and a per foot price hides that.
